Getting the newest miro that works on ubuntu gutsy with backports activated

27 July 2008, 02:16

Moments ago, I was tired of using revision3 ‘s flash player to listen to the diggnation video podcast. So I decided it was time I installed miro on my gutsy laptop.

I’ve used miro before (pre 1.0 days) and I think it’s a great app! But I stopped listening to video podcasts because of a lack of time. Since then, I changed my laptop (and haven’t upgraded to hardy yet [see excuse above]) and that’s why I’m needing miro tonight on an old OS (old being a few months old when you are a ubuntu follower).

I didn’t want a pre-1.0 miro since I had issues with these versions in the past unfortunately gutsy’s current miro version is 0.9.8. So I headed straight to getmiro.com since I knew they were providing newer packages.

Well here comes the sad part. In miro’s ubuntu download page

Note: We don’t support backports repositories. We’re very sorry for this, but it’s too much work to maintain all the combinations. If you can help, let us know.

Being an enthusiast (see above) of course I had enabled backports!

The error you get when trying to install this repo’s version is a libxine1 version being newer than expected by this miro package.

So, now I thought I’ll check if there was a version > 0.9.8 provided by miro that did work with backport repositories enabled. Guess what? I found one: 1.1.1-3ubuntu.

What I ended up doing, more as a matter of circumstances than anything, is activating gutsy miro’s repo (put “deb http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/miro/linux/repositories/ubuntu gutsy/” in third party software sources) then grabbing the 1.1.1-3ubuntu package from the get older packages link of the download page. I used the graphical package installer and it told me that it used miro-data from the repository since it was newer. So my miro package is at 1.1.1-3 and my miro-data package at 1.2.3-0pcf1.

Well, it works!

So for you outhere in the same situation as me, here you go in a succinct manner:

  1. Follow installation instructions for gutsy
  2. When installing, expect an error about libxine1 version mismatch. Ignore it.
  3. Download 1.1.1-3 straight from miro’s archive.
  4. Double click on it to open it using the debian graphical package installer
  5. Expect a warning about using a newer miro-data. Install anyway!
  6. Happy Internet TV experience!
