high load average this semester
29 October 2008, 02:11
I’m very sorry if I am quiet on this blog but my load average is very high nowadays..
I’ll try to list the stuff I’m doing in parallel. Let’s hope the Google juice will pick it up and I’ll get high paying job opportunities.
- Working full time for a big Canadian telco1
- Giving System Security classes at University one evening a week
Of course it is a great experience don’t get me wrong. I am 110% glad/excited about doing this! But it came with preparing their virtual lab environment for penetration testing (you’ll hear more about that later) and this stuff is just taking a lot (read sh*t) load of time to do.. and now I am correcting their mid-terms.. argh
- Finishing my own engineering undergraduate degree at the same school
The only course left to do is a 3 credit “software engineering project”. This is a semester long project (~135hr) on some subject of your choice. Since I like the mobile space and freedom I decided to do a (re)implementation of tomboy on Android. I called it tomdroid. For now it’s mostly meta stuff but it will come and, of course, be open source.
- I am also the treasurer at our Condominium Owners Association.
What I expected would be a three meetings a year thing turned out to be a several emails a week job. I’m good at this political stuff but it’s still taking some time..
- I am a representative in the student union and have been for three years at several positions but my term is ending at the end of the month
- Ze girlfriend (I like ze girlfriend so I won’t let her down!)
- I had two weddings (and I didn’t recover easily from those) and two 3-days weekends helping the parents at the shack in the last two months..
- homebrewing
When you are brewing with this guy and you are of the occasional heavy drinker type then just need to brew. This is not a hobby anymore. But don’t get fooled it doesn’t take that much time. Unless you get some sort of contract to brew for ETS’ team at quebec’s engineering games (which I organized last year as a VP) but schhht it’s a secret; we are not brewing beer for them!
But, seriously, I’m even taking days off of main work to work as developing labs for my teaching job or even getting my undergrad degree finished..
I know, I’m a little crybaby.. but I already feel better talking about it..
The problem with being loaded like that is that sometimes you don’t do things as perfect as you would like to.. and, of course the stuff you are not paid for is always the first to take the hit..
Let’s hope I get out of all of this alive.
1 Since I have not taken the time to write a little “What I express here is my own opinion and not the view of …” I won’t disclose the name of my employer. Anyways, the 3 people (friends) reading this blog already know which company it is :)
