Canon LiDE 210 scanner support on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick

23 December 2010, 16:02

I just bought a scanner thinking that if it’s not supported I would return it (but hoping that I wouldn’t have to).

I should have checked the sane website on supported hardware...

Turns out that support for the LiDE 210 was added into sane’s git a few days ago. This is so recent that there’s no ubuntu package for it yet. So I decided to add an updated one to my PPA.

So, to get your LiDE 210 scanner working under Ubuntu 10.10 you need to:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:plaxx/random-fixes
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install libsane sane-utils

This way you will have a recent sane version (December 23rd) with LiDE 210 support.

I’m pretty sure this won’t be required in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty since I would expect an updated release straight from the sane project to be included in the upcoming ubuntu release.

Happy holiday season to everyone!

It also works for the LiDE 200

  2. Hi Olivier,
Thanks for the Excellent Tip/Update. I bought a Lide 110 earlier in the year, for work
-I Can confirm that this update works with that model as well.(I only need to scan the occasional Document and the 110 was cheaper in the shop).
    Thanks again,

    Henry

  3. Hi Oliver, this is a good help BUT since i am totally new in using ubuntu, i have no idea what those programming commands do… for sure i copied your commands but all i get were errors.

i am using CanonScan LiDE 100 – could you guide me on how to use similar commands to get the correct driver for me?

(BTW, i was a windows user for 20+ years so you can imagine how dumb i am with those command-line stuffs).

    happy holidays!

  4. Hi Edgar,

I just edited my post: all commands should have “sudo” in front of them (previously only the first one did).

It should work for LiDE 100 as well.

Try again and let me know if it works for you.

    Cheers!

  5. I am using 10.04, is there a way for me to manually add this? Thanks for any suggestions!

    — Billy · 7 January 2011, 22:46 · #

  6. @Billy

Robert Ancell’s PPA provides sane builds based on sane’s git tree. Luckily for you, he provides lucid builds (10.04) that should have the LiDE work integrated.

Just replace ppa:plaxx/random-fixes with ppa:robert-ancell/sane-backends in the first command provided in my post and proceed with the rest.

When I first did my post Robert’s PPA was outdated by a couple of days and it was already too old for my newly received LiDE 210 to be supported. Thus why I provided the packages.

If Robert or the sane guys are doing a good job of keeping sane’s git master from obscure bugs then Robert’s PPA is probably a way better bet than my own PPA.

  7. Olivier,

Thanks for putting this blogpost together. I just switched to Ubuntu and was afraid that my Canon Lide 210 wouldn’t work on it. So far I am loving Ubuntu!!!! :)

  8. Hello,

I’ve installed my LIDE 210 following the lines above in UBUNTU 10.10. It’s working fine, but the scanning output of a white page has a light blue color. Switching to grey scale and scanning it’s light grey. I’m using XSANE for scanning. Scanning fotos is impossible.
In a VM with MS Windows and the software of the LIDE 210 there is no problem with the color.

    Have you the same problems?

    — Frank · 6 February 2011, 12:49 · #

  9. @Frank,

No, no such problems. I’ve been scanning images fine and I have not noticed light blue output. I’m using simple-scan, it’s very simple and to the point. It’s packaged in Ubuntu.

Hopefully you’ll be able to resolve your issue.

  10. I’ve followed the insructions and my scanner Canon LIDE 100 is recognized by Xsane. Great job !!!

  11. Hi guys,
I’m one of those noobs that keep popping up.
I’ve got my 210 scanner ‘kind of’ working using the terminal stuff at the top of the page, but, is there anyway I can get the actual buttons on the scanner to work?
A one press thing would be pretty nice :)
Also, the canon software wouldn’t properly load the setup.exe …wine kept closing and saying “No” to me.
any help available for my dumb ass self?
    cheers,
    Dave

  12. Hi,
this perfectly works for LIDE110 on U10.10, but I also need to install LIDE110 on U9.04 – can you advice how?
    regards,

    Adam · 19 March 2011, 16:09 · #

  13. Thanks. Worked for me as well on a Lide 110

    — Filip · 30 March 2011, 07:29 · #

  14. I just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04, and the bad news is that my Canon Lide 210 is no longer recognised by xsane.

Any chance you could create a package for Unbuntu 11.04 ?

    — Anthony · 3 May 2011, 15:43 · #

  15. I confirm that Canon LiDE 210 works fine under Ubuntu 11.04 as 11.04 includes libsane 1.0.22, so there’s no need to use this PPA now.

  19. Hi,

I have plugged in my Canon CanoScan LIDE 110 and it works perfectly with Xsane. I have one problem. How do i get the 4 buttons to work? (PDF, AUTO SCAN, COPY, E-MAIL)

    Antoine van Dinter · 20 August 2011, 07:24 · #

  20. hi this seems to work for the old LIDE50 also (with sane .21 it was unusable). thanks very much!
p.s. this kind of thing makes me wonder why on earth they (ubuntu/canonical) don’t put such essential fixes in their repos… it’s crazy. but thanks for providing this.

    — Smiff · 2 September 2011, 15:22 · #

  21. Yep. Worked on lide 110. Thanks and respect!

    — Tauno · 6 September 2011, 10:01 · #

  22. Canon Lide 210 works on my Ubuntu 10.04 perfectly! Installed the drivers using Robert’s PPA.

    Thank you very much! :D

For some reason Simple Scan didn’t detect the scanner, but the Xsane Image Scanner did, it’s all good.. :)

    — unnamed · 28 September 2011, 18:18 · #

  23. I wrote all the three commands properly, still it is not working.
Im using canon canoscan lide 100 scanner

    — muraleedharan · 13 November 2011, 03:25 · #

  24. STOKED!!! that my brand new CanoScan LiDE210 works on my Ubuntu 10.10
    really made my day!

at first it didn’t work – but then I turned off my computer… after a while I turned it back on (when I finally thought I would give it another go) and it miraculously worked!
    can’t thank you enough!

button support would be epic! though I’m just glad I didn’t have to switch back to Windows!

    — TooFreppaT · 27 November 2011, 22:36 · #

  25. Amazing! It’s working just excellent! Thank you very very much for that tip.

I would never have figured that out by myself! :)
